Welcome to English... Greater Depth Enrichment Programme 2019
Week 6:
Harry Potter played his part in our session this week, as we explored implicit and explicit meanings in an extract from The Philosopher's Stone. Matthew was particularly good at the group work. He will be given his certificate next week, but was happy to pose with Mrs Williamson's Oscar!
Week 5:
Pupils continued their creative writing this week, using sensory detail to improve the descriptions of otherwise drab and dull places! Excellent work, guys!
Week 4:
Today we spent time exploring the use of figurative language and using this in our own work. The pupils created some wonderful sentences, using their imaginations to fully incorporate figurative language into their own writing.
Week 3:
Today we spent our Greater Depth session looking at culture: what it means to us and what it means to our country.
We used our inference and deduction skills to study a poem, Blessing. All of the Year 6 students enjoyed discussing the language found in the poem.
There were lots of insightful comments made about culture and how it impacts our lives.
Well done to Summer from Flimby Primary School for being awarded this week’s Super Six for hard work and perceptive comments about the poem.
Week 2:
The Year 6 Greater Depth group had an excellent time this afternoon. We put our detective skills to good use in order to infer what Roald Dahl was saying about the "formidable" Miss Trunchbull!
We explored the explicit and implicit meanings of texts, and participated in some excellent discussions about the writer's craft.
Well done to Jessica for becoming our second "Super Six" winner of the term. She was awarded the prize for her excellent inference skills.
Week 1:
Wow!
What a wonderful start to our Greater Depth Enrichment sessions, here at Workington Academy. This afternoon saw local Year 6 pupils arrive for their first lesson with Mrs Williamson. We enjoyed competing in a Literacy quiz, and worked on Word Walls!
Well done to Asia, for winning the first "Super Six" award... she gave an exceptional explanation of the phrase "red herring"!
